In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
