Social Media Influencers Driving Unofficial Trade for Unlicensed Slimming Medication

A shadow market for unlicensed slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.

Experimental Treatment Gaining Traction Online

The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Viewers are urged to contact these profiles directly for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.

Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share comparison images, administration instructions and claims of next-day British shipping. Sellers market the substance there before directing customers to other platforms for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

This medication is an experimental injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help individuals reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Voice Concerns

Nevertheless, doctors and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to users administering substances of unknown origin.

Several experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of licensed slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Implementation

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be promoted or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.

Some influencers try to circumvent the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, risking fines, prosecution or prison.

Service Response and Material Removal

Based on the social media company, the platform has taken down violative material and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The organization stated it was committed to keeping the platform safe and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Online Trading Operations

Research also discovered communities with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, filled with photos of weight loss, glowing reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or injecting at residence.

Within moments of entering one community, a vendor shared contact information, where the majority of purchases occur. The vendor provided an guidebook and promised shipping within two days. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a alleged testing documentation. None asked about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Information and Costs

Within these groups, posts display dark colored parcels with postal service stickers, claiming to contain new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens typically priced at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a pen should be used, vendors give contradictory answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Actions

A representative for Telegram stated it actively monitored dangerous content on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Cautions

“Individuals are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these digital versions may not include what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in demand to recent price rises for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are turning to social media. But fake treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has already seen patients injured by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” said the doctor. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A representative from Eli Lilly stated the substance was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet approved … may expose patients to possibly serious medical dangers”.
