Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying such treatments should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
