Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
